Paw, pore, poor and pour: Spot the homophones

By Joyanne James. Do you know the difference between the sounds of the words paw, pore, poor and pour? These four words are homophones in some varieties of English such as in Caribbean countries. In other varieties, only pore, poor and pour have the same sound.

This fun activity should keep your brain active as you must know the meanings of these words to get this exercise right. Here is a short story that requires you to know the different spellings of words that sound the same.

This story is about a cat and requires you to know if paw, pore, poor and pour refer to an economic situation, animal’s body part, action or a part of a human’s body. A pour girl named Shirley had a cat named Purrly with brown fur on her left pore. Purrly wakes Shirley with a pore raising swirly each morning at half past four. They jump to the ground and start moving around to head to the farm for the day. They go to make sure that the rain did not paw and wet the whole stack of hay.

Purrly helps Shirley poor water into pails to clean out the dirty pens. Shirley is too pour to buy food in the store to feed the cows, the pigs and the hens. Kitchen scraps will do even just a few to give the pore animals a taste. The work makes them wet causing Shirley to sweat from every pour on her tired face.

Once the rain starts to paw, they will do one last chore and into the house they will run. A bubble bath is set and Purrly’s poor gets wet as she makes sure it’s right for the fun. After the bath, they share a jam tart and pore a warm glass of milk. They are never too pour to cuddle up and snore in a blanket made out of silk.

What Shirley didn’t know was that Purrly would go to the barn every morning to play. She got up real early and left her pore Shirley to sleep as she went on her way. She joined the farm animals in a game of tag and took milk to poor all around. One day, the cows mooed loudly and the pigs snorted fiercely making a thunderous sound.

Shirley was startled, each paw raised on her skin as the noise was loud and very frightening. Purrly her cat with the brown pore was gone so Shirley got her slippers and the search was on. She grabbed a flashlight, milk and a bowl to pour a fresh drink for the pour hungry soul. As she reached by the barn, tears trickled down her face. Her house pet looked so happy in a dirty place.
